Breaking into the cutthroat world of sales takes grit, but absolutely nobody expected a clueless rookie to pull off the highest-grossing marketing stunt in retail history.
Desperate for cash, Little Johnny answered a newspaper ad for a door-to-door toothbrush salesman. “It’s simple,” the hiring manager told him. “Just knock on doors and pitch the product.”
Johnny’s first day was a total flop—he sold exactly one toothbrush. The manager sighed, “It’s your first day, so I’ll let it slide. But you need to do better tomorrow.”
The next day, Johnny doubled his effort but only managed to sell two. The manager was furious. “Two?! That’s pathetic! You have one more day to prove yourself, or you’re fired.”
On day three, Johnny walked triumphantly back into the office and slammed a massive stack of cash onto the desk. “I sold fifteen hundred toothbrushes today!” he announced proudly.
The manager’s jaw dropped. “Fifteen hundred?! That’s a company record! How on earth did you pull that off?”
Johnny grinned. “Easy. I set up a free tasting table at the local supermarket with a big bowl of tortilla chips and dip. People would walk up, take a huge bite, and immediately gag, screaming, ‘Oh my god, this dip tastes like actual crap!'”
Johnny leaned in and smiled. “And I’d say, ‘It is. Want to buy a toothbrush?'”
