I was at Asda yesterday when I got stuck with the grumpiest checkout assistant I’d ever seen.
She had the expression of someone who’d just been personally offended by the existence of customers.
I put my shopping on the counter. I’d only bought some milk and bread.
“£1.03, please,” she said without even looking up.
I handed her a £20 note.
She stared at it like I’d just handed her a live grenade.
“Haven’t you got anything smaller?” she snapped. “That’ll use up all my change, and I don’t want to count out £18.97.”
I smiled and said,
“I’ve got nothing, if that helps.”
She didn’t even blink.
Clearly, sarcasm wasn’t included in her training.
So I sighed and said,
“Fine. I’ll pay by card.”
“Don’t do me any favours,” she muttered.
I calmly inserted my card and entered my PIN.
She glanced at the screen.
“Cash back?”
I looked at her, smiled sweetly, and said,
“Oh, yes.”
“£18.97, please.”
For the first time all afternoon…
Her face actually changed.
And honestly, it was worth every penny.
