We all treasure our privacy, especially at home. Our reader Natalie had her privacy questioned when her husband gave his mother the house key. Natalie was taken aback by what happened next, and she shared her story with us.
This is Natalie’s letter:
My husband gave his mom our house key. I was furious, but she smiled and said, “You must have forgotten that I paid for this house!” I tried to argue, but my husband shrugged and said, “She paid for the house, so we can’t say no!” I couldn’t stop him from giving her the keys, but I decided to secretly install a camera.
Months later, I went on a work trip to another state, but when I returned, something felt weird in the house. Small but expensive decorations were missing. That’s when I remembered the camera. I checked it and couldn’t believe my eyes.
My reality crumbled in a second. It showed my husband and his mother packing small items from the house.
I confronted him, and he said that his mother was angry and felt offended by my initial refusal to give her the keys, so she decided to take back the gifts she had given us for our wedding.
The worst thing is that my husband is on his mom’s side. He says that my reaction was unfair toward her and that I should’ve respected her more.
Was I asking for too much if I wanted privacy in my own home?
