Woman, 105, meets her newborn great-great-grandaughter for the first time
A 105 year-old woman met her newborn great-great-granddaughter during a celebration where five generations of her family gathered together for the first time.
Annie Berry met new arrival Olivia at the Genesis Larkin Chase Center in Bowie, Maryland, last week, when the little girl was just a week old.
And Annie was instantly smitten with the newborn, saying: ‘I think she’s cute like grandmama,’ with a wink and a smile as Olivia cried.
Annie was born in Meridian, Mississippi in 1914, and celebrated her 105th birthday last month.
The birthday celebrations were held at the Genesis Larkin Chase Center in Bowie.
She moved north to escape the racial segregation which saw African Americans face heavy discrimination in America’s deep south, working as a white caretaker for a family in North Carolina.
Annie later worked as a school administrator, and moved to Washington DC to live with family after retiring.
Her granddaughter Annie Sewell said considerable progress towards equality had been made in Annie Sr’s lifetime.
She was born in Meridian, Mississippi, in 1914 and has seen much in her time on earth.
One of which is the nation being led by a black President, something she always believed she would have the good fortune of seeing before she breathes her last.
Her granddaughter Annie Sewell told WUSA9, “She said before I leave this earth we will see a black president. I didn’t think it, but it came to pass.”
‘I didn’t think it, but it came to pass.’
And Annie Sr is hopeful for her great great grandaughter’s future, adding: ‘I’d like for her to be kind and loving and do what mother says to do.’
Asked for the secret of her longevity, Annie Sr credits her religious faith, saying that her ‘obedience to the Lord’ has kept her alive and happy.
